There's nothing quite like a good burger. I don't like them to be so thick that you end up dribbling half of it down your face when you're eating it but also they can't be so skinny that you feel like you need three of them to fill you up. There's something so satisfying about making your own burgers; getting all squelchy mixing it all together is something I very much enjoy. You know when only a take away will do? I get that feeling sometimes and short of actually eating said take away there's not much else that can fulfill that craving. The issue I find is the subsequent guilt after consumption because I always order too much and somehow eat it all anyway. At least that was before I made this stir fry. This has everything I want when I'm craving a take away but using my own ingredients. I'd like to think it's healthy
The Cornish pasty is an absolute classic. If you're ever in Cornwall you won't be far from one, you'll probably smell it before you see it. Originally from humble origins the pasty is now a celebrated meat and vegetable filled pastry. For those who don't know the pasty was the food of Cornish miners. The way it is folded over (with a thick edge of pastry on one side) meant that the miners didn't have to put their hands in their mouths when eating.
For some reason I have a bit of a thing for French food. It's the food that never fails to put a smile on my face; partly because of the flavours but also because it's a great excuse to showcase local, British ingredients in different ways. It's a funny time of year, I feel it's almost time to crack out a salad but at the same time I still want comfort and warmth. What better than the absolute classic French onion soup?

Beautiful, traditional and French; a perfect meal for Valentine's Day. This one's a winner because the bottle of wine you need for the boeuf bourguignon you can then drink with the meal or yourself during the preparation as a reward for all your hard work. Being a slow cooking dish means once it's on the go you don't need to worry about it and you can get on with other things. If that wasn't enough, it's also incredible and actually quite cheap.
I planted eighteen broad bean seeds under their little cloches back in March and I had eighteen successful broad bean plants come up giving me lovely green pods all of July and early August. I planted eighteen French purple bean seeds under their little cloches and I had two plants come up. I'm not sure it was my year for these little chaps.
Fortunately the two little plants that managed to battle the elements (and the neighbours heavy pawed cat)
I needed something slow cooked and full of goodness. Fortunately I had a fridge full of treats from the farmers' market. I had some seriously good braising steak from Challow Hill and a congregation of fantastic veg from the greengrocer.
What you will need (for four to six portions):
Braising steak (at least 500-750g)
Vegetables of your choice - carrots, swede, onions, leeks, pasnips - a few good handfuls
It is almost the end of the week and time to use all that is left in the fridge to make room for all next weeks new and exciting food. Trips to delicatessens and markets have been planned in.
I found some stir fry strips lurking in the freezer that I had bought from a lovely lady from Challow Hill Meats at the farmers' market. This meal seems somehow to always be ready at just the right time, it all comes together precisely at the end.
What to do with quite a significant sized marrow, no time and a fridge full of food but nothing to eat. It was then that I remembered the very wise man who sold me the marrow in the first place. He recommended a baked marrow but not to cut it down the middle and then stuff it as one might expect but to go about it as follows.
You will need (for four):
Salt and pepper
Small handful fresh mint
It's the end of term and funds are running low. Gone are the days of spontaneous eating out and in are the days of making whatever is edible from the darkest corners of the cupboard.
Never fear. Over the last few days I have made meals which feed two for £3 or less and even if I do say so myself are rather nice. Also, they are at least 2 of your 5 a day! Here's my recipe for a budget spaghetti bolognese.
