A Weekend in Windsor

November 7, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 7 Comments

This was a gifted stay and meal.

Even though I have lived in Berkshire for most of my life I have only been to Windsor once when I was much younger so I don’t remember it at all. I like to go to new places and towns and find out what they’re all about and when Mercure hotels got in touch to see if I would like to head off for a weekend in Windsor I was really looking forward to it. We were so lucky with the weather; a lovely sunny autumn weekend and I think I managed to see as much of it as possible in the time I was there. read more

Green Clementine Fruit Salad with Mint and Vanilla Syrup

November 2, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 13 Comments

You know when the nights start to get dark earlier, it’s a bit colder than it was before and people start sneezing (not due to hayfever) that you just want to be on holiday? I have a significant desire to be on a beach from November to February; unfortunately it’s not a practical option. So, to make the best of it I surround myself with fruit. The more tropical and bright the better but there’s only so many pineapples one person can eat. I was delivered some beautiful green clementines with my recent veg box and they deserved to have a bit of a fuss made of them: a lovely bright green clementine fruit salad with a mint and vanilla syrup. read more

New Products in the Kitchen

October 28, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 5 Comments

Rachel's Organic Divine Pots Review - All That I'm Eating (1 of 2)

There have been a few new products in the kitchen recently: Rachel’s Divine Pots and a Degustabox box. The Rachel’s Dessert Pots are relatively new to the market and the whole point of a Degustabox is to bring you a box of the latest food products and both made welcome additions to my kitchen. I certainly wasn’t short of snacks for a while.

I really like the yoghurts that I’ve tried from Rachel’s in the past so I was looking forward to trying their new Divine Pots. I thought they were similar to Gu in principle (you eat them straight from the fridge) but they are organic. I liked that they came in little glass pots; a bit more special than plastic! I tried the chocolate and the vanilla; they were both good but the chocolate was my favourite as I liked the slight bitterness from the chocolate. read more

Le Manoir Cookery School with Kenwood

October 23, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 6 Comments

A few weeks ago I set off in my little car to go somewhere I have always wanted to go: Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. Having watched Raymond Blanc on the television for years, tried my hand at a few of his recipes and known that Le Manoir isn’t actually that far away from me, I was really looking forward to going. I was invited to take part in a cookery class with four other lovely bloggers to try out the new Kenwood mixer and make a couple of different recipes. We had a few little snacks to start the evening: goat’s cheese with manuka honey, beef tartare with horseradish, smoked salmon with yuzu and vegetable curry balls with smoked mayonnaise. They were absolutely delicious. But before the cooking began we had a tour of the gardens. read more

Review: What to Bake and How to Bake It. Buttermilk Pound Cake

October 19, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 6 Comments

What to Bake and How to Bake it book

I was sent What to Bake and How to Bake It to review and I was really looking forward to having a flick through the pages to see what to bake. I knew it would be a fab book from the quick look I initially had but I wasn’t quite expecting it to be such the joy that it was. The quirky cover makes it stand out amongst the other books on my shelves and I liked the colours and illustrations. There are two key things I noticed about the book which I love: firstly, Jane provides pictures right at the start showing you exactly what butter and sugar look like when perfectly creamed (and if they’re over beaten) amongst other techniques, secondly, she doesn’t assume you have a microwave. I don’t have a microwave and it’s amazing how many cookery books assume you have one (I think I’m in the minority but still!). The book is published by Phaidon and they kindly said I could publish one of the recipes so I tried my hand at the Buttermilk Pound Cake. read more

Baravin at Aberystwyth

October 13, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 7 Comments

While I was in Wales recently we took a day trip to Aberystwyth; mainly so we could see the sea. I wasn’t sure whether it would be a big seaside town or a teeny little place perched on the coast. As it turns out it was quite a big town but with hardly any of the chain shops you might find in similar places; plenty of support for independent traders which was nice to see. It was a classic British seaside town with a mix of big houses (now mostly B&Bs) on the seafront, little back streets and plenty of chips! read more

Fairtrade Coffee Shortbread

October 8, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 15 Comments

It’s #befair fortnight until 12th October which is all about asking the question, “Are we really as fair as we think?”. The Fairtrade Foundation is working to make us aware of small acts of fairness that can make a big change; like switching your morning coffee to a fair trade coffee. The people at the Fairtrade Foundation sent me a variety of coffees to try and I set about making a fair bake. This recipe for chocolate and coffee shortbread uses fair trade chocolate, sugar and coffee. read more

Beetroot Tzatziki, Beef Koftas and Quick Flatbreads

October 3, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 9 Comments

Beetroot Tzatziki with Quick Flatbreads and Beef Koftas - All That I'm Eating (2 of 2)

Beetroot can be a bit of a pain in my house, other than putting it in a salad or putting it on the side with something I am sometimes at a loss for what to do with it. When I get a bunch I find the easiest thing to do is to cook it all at the same time then peel it and keep it in the fridge for when I need it. Using the beetroot for a beetroot tzatziki was a great discovery and was so good with the beef koftas and super quick homemade flatbreads.

Ingredients

You will need (for two):

For the koftas:

  • 200g beef mince
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper

For the beetroot tzatziki: read more

Wild Wales – A Hiking Adventure

September 28, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 7 Comments

I have been camping a few times with my family, with school and even once in my own back garden. For some reason unbeknown to me I had the grand idea to pack up a load of camping stuff and go hiking through wild Wales. I have never hiked anywhere before unless you count carrying the washing basket upstairs. If you’re considering hiking and camping then this is a tale for you.

I consider my other half and myself to be somewhat sensible people with reasonable general knowledge and survival skills. I mean, we’ve watched Ray Mears a few times and Wales has no poisonous spiders or bears to contend with; how hard can it be? read more

Tomatitos at Hay-on-Wye

September 21, 2014 By All That I'm Eating 4 Comments

Tomatitos restaurant Hay on Wye - All That I'm Eating

I had heard rumours that Hay-on-Wye is a book lover’s paradise. In case you weren’t aware I love books but could probably be accused of having a few too many. Hay-on-Wye was somewhere I’d always fancied going, just for a nose around mind you, to see what it was all about. We weren’t too far away when we were in Wales so went for the day. It’s a real classic English town, picturesque and with a huge array of antique emporiums and book shops. And Tomatitos at Hay-on-Wye is a really good tapas restaurant.
We wandered around the town for a little while looking for somewhere to have lunch and stumbled on a place called Tomatitos; a quick look at the menu told us it was tapas which is always a good thing as far as I’m concerned. I can try all sorts of different things; a bit of this, a bit of that and everyone can dig in. We sat outside, the sun was shining, the food was good and we could have (I’m not joking) easily been in Spain. read more
