I am very familiar with the flavour of bergamot, being an avid Earl Grey fan, but I had never seen or tasted the bergamot lemon itself. A mystical fruit that I thought was confined to tea makers and lucky Mediterranean gardens. Then I found I could order some beautiful organic ones along with my veg box; it would be rude not to. My first thought when I got them was to add a slice to some hot water, just to smell and taste them. But then I remembered I had some gin, and, you know, why not? Hello bergamot gin and tonic.
New in the Kitchen February 2016
Although February is the shortest month, this year it seems to have dragged on for some time. Not necessarily a bad thing as it has given me plenty of time to munch (and drink) my way through all sorts of different products that have appeared in my kitchen this month. If you’re looking for new snack ideas, there are several to check out in this post alongside a bottle or two of wine and some lovely frozen fruit and vegetables.
I do like a good old crisp. Ready salted, salt and vinegar or cheese and onion are my go to flavours but it’s always interesting to try something new. As you can see I had a whole host of flavours to try from Corkers. Three types of vegetable crisps: sweet potato with chilli, parsnip with honey and black pepper and simply salted beetroot, parsnip and sweet potato. For the potato flavours: sausage and english mustard, duck and hoisin sauce, sweet Thai chilli, salt and cider vinegar, salted, cheddar cheese and chive and salt and pepper. I’ll be honest and say that I liked them all but the flavours that I particularly enjoyed were the parnsip, honey and black pepper (like a batch of home roasted parsnips) and the sweet Thai chilli (not too hot, a really nice flavour). I have seen corkers in a few pubs so if you fancy something different with your pint or G&T, give these a try!
Coconut, Sesame and Chocolate Shortbread
When something just works it’s the best. It could be a combination of flavours you tried by accident or using something perfectly for a different purpose than it was designed for. I made this Coconut, Sesame and Chocolate Shortbread for both of the aforementioned reasons. Recently I was enjoying my chocolate dessert when another coconut and sesame pudding was on the table, and as I like to try everything, I took a scoop of the coconut and sesame and gobbled it down. The flavours were so good together I thought it was well worth a try recreating it at home. Also, I always make shortbread in a cake ‘tin’ rather than on a tray. I have a silicone mould for cakes which I once used for shortbread when I couldn’t find anything else and it works perfectly every time.
Aluna Bristol
This was a gifted meal.
Bristol is just over an hour away from me so it’s not too far for a day out but not close enough that I pop over on a regular basis. So when I do go I like to make the most of it; there’s always plenty to see and do. I went last weekend for a wander round the shops and it always surprises me how far the city stretches and the new places I find. This time I found a lovely street market and food hall very near each other so I was well occupied for at least an hour. We had planned lunch a bar and restaurant called Aluna which specialises in cocktails and Asian food.
Aubergine, Butterbean, Pesto and Gnocchi Bake with Sacla
Pasta bake has got to be one of the best comfort dishes going. Plenty of carbs smothered in tomato, cheese or cream sauce with all sorts of lovely other bits in there; bacon or mushrooms being my favourite. For me a pasta bake is normally a weekend dish as it takes a bit of time to make, however, this recipe using gnocchi takes only 45 minutes from start to table and is mighty tasty and super simple too. Not only that, if you serve it with salad you’ve got five different vegetables (fruit if we’re being picky about the tomatoes and aubergine) all in one meal. Say hello to my Aubergine, Butterbean, Pesto and Gnocchi Bake.
The Guardhouse Cafe Brixham
Maybe it’s just me but whenever I go somewhere for a day, perhaps a wander round an estate, to the beach or for a tree climbing, rope swinging experience I always expect much more from the on-site café than it delivers. I never learn and take my own food though, I just wash the cardboard sandwich down with terrible coffee and have done with it. However, don’t despair and think all is lost because I have good news. There is a café which could rival any of the best and it’s located at a popular walking spot in Brixham, Devon.
New In The Kitchen January 2016
It’s been another busy month in the All That I’m Eating kitchen, there’s been all sorts to try. I do love getting a parcel that’s full of something new or different that I may not have heard of or tried before; there’s always something going on! This new in the kitchen January round up is no different; pandan extract, elderflower iced tea and a whole host of things made out of coconut. I only ever put up products that I feel are worth trying; ideas for you to keep your eyes peeled for when you’re out and about.
Mini Cheesecake Mess with The Laughing Cow
I love cheesecake. This recipe for mini cheesecake mess is a great way of using up almost anything sweet you’ve got hanging around and, if I do say so myself, look pretty cute too. A lovely little sweet treat for lunch or after dinner. Have you ever tried to make cheesecake (or cream cheese icing) with low fat soft cheese? It never seems to work for me and just ends up all runny and no good at all. I thought I’d give it a try with some Laughing Cow Extra Light to see if that would work, and use up some leftover festive food in the cupboards, and I was so pleased with how they turned out!
Spinach and Cheese Vegetarian Sausage Rolls with The Laughing Cow
Hang on, a sausage roll that doesn’t have any sausage in it? Correct. I absolutely love a proper sausage roll; when the juices run out of it and caramelise under the flaky pastry. To pack a picnic with a couple of sausage rolls and a flask of tea is to pack a fine picnic as far as I’m concerned. So what’s with this vegetarian creation? My reasons are threefold: firstly, at this time of year I need pastry; secondly, I love spinach and particularly spanakopita and thirdly I wondered what a vegetable ‘sausage’ roll would be like.
A Trip to Derbyshire
I have to admit I’m a bit of a last minute getaway planner. I could spend forever finding somewhere to go or stay but when it’s two days before I’m meant to be leaving I have to make a decision and just book. I think I quite like the uncertainty and mystery, all is unveiled a few days before and the anticipation begins.
Getting far enough away that you feel you’re somewhere different but not too far that you spend more time in the car than on holiday is a bit of a tricky balance. I am a big fan of getting away somewhere in the UK and this time Derbyshire was to be the destination, more specifically Youlgreave. For those of you who read my blog from overseas, one of the most British occurrences happened before we’d even got in the car to leave. It turns out Youlgreave is not only spelled like that but also: Youlgrave and Youlegreave. Because why not.
