Sharing my weekly meal planning on Instagram is something I’ve been doing for a while and it’s so nice to hear when people find them useful. This post is all about how my meal plans and recipe ideas have changed and some top tips to get into meal planning yourself. Looking back over the past year there has been a noticeable change in what I’ve been cooking and eating and it’s happened so slowly I’ve barely noticed it. I have accidentally become (almost) vegetarian. I didn’t mean to, it just sort of happened.
My Favourite Recipes of 2015
There have been many new recipes in the All That I’m Eating kitchen this year and this post is all about my favourites from 2015. That’s not to say that all the others aren’t worth a perusal but these are my most favourite; those which have become regulars on the kitchen table since I first made them, those that I remember simply for being indulgent and some which came about as a healthy (but delicious) take on a classic.
First up, and what a way to start the year, is my Blood Orange Tart with Caramelised Blood Oranges. A blood orange juice and zest infused custard topped with glazed sliced blood oranges is not only a welcome burst of colour in a grey January but a fabulous burst of citrus flavour in what can seem like a never ending month of cabbages. Full post here.
Ultimate Hot Chocolate Gifts
I love a good hot chocolate; not too sweet, not too bitter but full of chocolate flavour and I have been working on perfecting my recipe for the ultimate hot chocolate. This recipe is too good not to share, and what nicer way to share it than making some (ever so pretty) make-your-own hot chocolate gifts. You need only four ingredients, a few empty jars, some string, paper and your very neatest handwriting. A word of warning: make sure you make enough to keep one for yourself.
Below are the amounts to make enough mixture for one person so double, triple, quadruple and all sorts depending on who you are making for.
Homemade Easy Granola
Why bother making your own granola? I mean, the stuff that comes in a nice box all full of stuff can’t really be that different and making your own sounds like such a hassle right? Nope. As it turns out making your own is not only ridiculously easy but it’s so much tastier than anything I’ve tried pre-bought. I find the readymade ones are far too sweet and you spend every morning searching for the elusive hazelnuts you’re pretty sure are meant to be in there. With my homemade easy granola you make up your mind and decide exactly what goes in your breakfast.
Slojito
I have been so busy this year that I have run out of time to make my own sloe gin. It’s not the end of the world though as I have some of last year’s stash left and once that’s gone there are some delicious ready steeped and drained sloe gins around. As much as I enjoy a classic sloe gin and tonic there’s much enjoyment to be had mixing up something different.
One place you can find some inspiration for new drinks to try is thebar. I found their recipe for a slojito and just had to give it a try!
The Red Lion at Stoke Poges
This was a gifted meal.
If I go into a pub in the winter and there is a fire, I am a happy customer. I walked into the Red Lion at Stoke Poges to find four fires going and a great range of drinks at the bar. On a drizzly, grey day that’s always a welcome sight. I was there to try out their lunch offerings and after sitting down in the restaurant, which was lovely, bright and airy but still with brick fireplaces and exposed beams, I tried to make some menu choices.
One side of the menu is a la carte style; starters, sharing plates and mains and on the back are the pub classics. You may have seen before that I always check out what the vegetarian option is to see if a place puts as much effort into their veggie offerings as the rest of their plates. I think you can tell a lot about a place by what they offer their vegetarian diners; if it’s mushroom risotto, walk out of the door. I was so impressed with the veggie options, at least five to choose from in the mains and one of the specials was veggie too.
Christmas Food and Gift Guide
If someone is kind enough to get me a gift for Christmas I love it when said gift is food or food related. I think it’s a very personal thing to give, whether it be something they have made themselves or taken time in choosing for you. This is my Christmas Food and Gift Guide; a range of different food and drink ideas from all sorts of places and companies.
Berry Brothers and Rudd had their Christmas preview all the way back in July when I ventured to the famous shop in London to learn more about their festive offerings. There were plenty of fabulous hampers, some just wine and some wine and food, to see and they all sounded great. A particular mention must go to the Cambrook caramelised peanuts that come in one of the hampers, they were absolutely delicious. Their signature gin (above) was very enjoyable too. Berry Brothers and Rudd don’t have a fantastic reputation and pedigree for nothing so you know if you’re getting wine from them it will be a fine example of that wine. They have launched their new book ‘Exploring and Tasting Wine’ which I am keeping my fingers crossed I get a copy of this year! Exploring and Tasting Wine is £30 and their hampers start at £31.50.
The Maytime Inn at Asthall
This was a gifted meal.
A few Fridays ago I headed off for a one night stay at The Maytime Inn at Asthall (near Burford, Oxfordshire). Sometimes I think a weekend away is better than a week away. Taking a Friday afternoon off to escape somewhere, far enough away that you’re somewhere different but not so far away that you’re forever travelling, to spend a short time relaxing or doing something new is always good idea as far as I’m concerned. Asthall is a very picturesque Cotswold village at the heart of which is The Maytime Inn.
New in the kitchen November
It’s been a very busy time in the ATIE kitchen over the last few weeks, I have only just got round to writing this post! There have been some fab products to try out this month and last, and as usual, a good variety too. This month we’ve got: cookie roulette, Korean sauces, yoghurt, salami and milk. I didn’t try them all in one sitting of course!
First up I tried out cookie roulette! Each year ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity raises money for soldiers, veterans and their families and this year every box of these cookies sold means £2 gets donated to the charity. They are available here. I love that they are shaped like a chilli and it was good fun trying not to choose the one with chilli in. Luckily I didn’t get it as I had a nibble and it is unbelievably hot!
The Part Time Vegetarian Book
If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen some of the weekly meal plans I put up. I can’t live without a meal plan; I think I would implode. As I find them so useful, my thinking is that other people may find them handy or take some inspiration from them. Looking at how my meal planning has changed and what I choose to eat now there has been a real shift in my kitchen and I now eat vegetarian meals four (and often more) times a week and I’m always looking for new vegetarian recipes to try out.
